The first modern center of medical training in Iran was founded in 1851. It was a part of the Institute of Dar-ol-Fonoon (Polytechnic). The School of Medicine was established as a part of University of Tehran in 1934.
Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) is the oldest and most well-known medical center in Iran, nationally as well as internationally. It also has the largest schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, rehabilitation, allied medical sciences, public health, advanced technologies in medicine, nutritional sciences and dietetics, and nursing and midwifery in Iran as well as a virtual school.
Children’s Medical Center (CMC) Hospital as the country’s center of excellence in pediatrics and the most comprehensive teaching, therapeutic and research center of children diseases in Iran, has started its activity since 1968, and thanks to the efforts of Dr.Hassan Ahari, and Dr Mohammad Gharib, has been named as, Dr. Ahari Hospital.
The center consists of 20 specialty and subspecialty wards, including : Pediatric emergency, Pediatric intensive care, infectious diseases, hematology and oncology, bone marrow transplantation, nephrology, hemodialysis, endocrinology, gastrointestinal disease and endoscopy, neonatology, NICU, immunology, rheumatology, neurology and epileptology, psychiatry, cardiology , open heart surgery and cardiac surgery ICU, Cardiac ICU, respiratory disease, sleep medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery , ENT surgery , urology surgery neurosurgery.

The history of Children’s Medical Center

Children’s Medical Center (CMC) Hospital as the country’s center of excellence in pediatrics and the most comprehensive teaching, therapeutic and research center of children diseases in Iran, has started its activity since 1968.
Construction of Children’s Medical Center was proposed by late Dr. Hassan Ahari in 1958. He was thinking of constructing this center after a trip to Montreal, Canada, to attend the ninth International Congress of Pediatrics along with late Dr. Mohammad Gharib, the founder of modern pediatrics medicine in Iran. During the trip he visited children's hospitals in Montreal, Toronto and some scientific centers in the U.S.A. Since many of these centers were supported by charities, Dr Ahari planned to found raising from charities and benefactors, and for the beginning he donated his own savings for this purpose, in April 1962. Therefore, he drew their attention to the construction of the center by providing them with the evidence and statistics about prevalence and importance of children’s morbidities and mortalities in Iran.
Cooperation of Dr. Farhad and Dr. Gharib had significant effects on achieving this goal but since the funds could not meet the costs, they started seeking help from the government and national organizations. Finally, the issue of constructing the center had accepted by the government and the responsibility of implementing the project was also assigned to Dr. Ahari in January 1962. He designed the plan of the Hospital under the inspiration of pediatric hospitals in Canada, U.S.A and Switzerland and finally the construction of the hospital began in October 1964. In addition to charities’ assistance, ministry of health, Tehran University and Iran's red Lion and Sun society participated in constructing and implementing this hospital. Purchasing necessary equipment from other countries was mediated by International Red Cross. When the plan of constructing the center was approved, Dr. Ahari established a charity group, named “Supporters of Children's Medical Center”. Their first meeting was held in December 1962 and officially registered in 1966.
Finally, on the fifteenth of November 1969, the hospital was inaugurated officially. The hospital started to work with the departments of infectious disease, nephrology, hematology, endocrinology, surgery, emergency and clinics in its first days of opening.
